Vector Microworlds is an educational software
which aims to overcome the difficulties arising during the introduction
of a new concept in physics or mathematics. The analysis focuses
on concepts of the vector in mathematics and physics and, in particular,
displacement and velocity vectors. "Vector Microworlds"
is carried out by our research team in the framework of the programme
"SEIRINES" supported by the Greek Ministry of Education.
The methodology is based on the instructional goals of the knowledge
domain, the latest implications and methods of the cognitive science
and the use of the new technologies of the science of informatics,
aiming at an efficient and attractive use of educational software.
The methodology includes activities - scenarios that simulate authentic
activities of the real world, within a computer supported learning
environment (situated learning). The learner can explore and test
his/her ideas through these activities, compare the observations
to his/her own experience and to the real world situation and become
an active constructor of his/her own knowledge.
It was very important for both teachers and learners to evaluate
the software in real classroom situations prior to implementation.
This evaluation was used to confirm that the educational goals were
being achieved and to modify the software design.
